Women See It A Mile Away
Fashion is subjective, and there's no universal list of clothes that every woman loves or dislikes. Still, certain men's style choices tend to divide opinions, particularly when someone is convinced that a particular look is automatically attractive simply because he likes it himself. From overly flashy accessories to outfits that seem better suited to a different decade, these are some of the choices that plenty of women might quietly wish would stay in the closet.
1. Extremely Baggy Jeans
We all like baggy jeans from time to time, but sometimes an overly baggy pair just looks kind of unintentional. When your shoes are disappearing into your jeans and your ankles can’t be seen, your outfit loses all structure. Pair your jeans baggy but not saggy, and you’ll find a comfortable medium.
2. Shirts With Huge Logos
Logo/graphic aside, an oversized font rolling across your chest screams distraction. Some women love flashy shirts, but if the shirt itself is overwhelming, there’s little room left to showcase you. Leave the billboards for the highway, and wear tiny shirts if you must, but let your personality be the focal point.
3. Excessive Cologne
We all like smelling nice, but there’s a huge difference between spraying some cologne and saturating yourself in it. A scent that smells good up close can become far too powerful when you’re dumping the bottle all over yourself. If someone can smell you across the room five seconds before you arrive, it’s time to take a break from spraying.
4. Deep V-Neck Shirts
Deep V-necks can be entirely intentional, but some guys take it way too far. Show off too much chest, and your outfit suddenly looks like you’re begging for attention. If you’re going for that style, tone down the plunge just a bit, and it’ll look way more intentional.
5. Pants That Are Far Too Tight
Skinny jeans and fitted shirts can look really nice, but there’s a line between fitted and trying to burst out of your pants. Baggy pants are one thing, but when your pants are visibly struggling to contain your legs, it distracts. Find your happy medium between skinny and parachute pants.
6. Excessive Jewelry
Arm bands, watches, bracelets, rings; jewelry can spice up an outfit if you’re not wearing twelve of them at once. If you have too many accessories competing for attention, the whole look starts to feel busy. Scale back your lineup a bit so each piece can shine on its own.
7. Sunglasses Indoors
We get it, shades are cool. Wear them outside, where you should be. There’s nothing wrong with wearing sunglasses inside unless you’re trying to hide something or keep the sun out.
8. The Constantly Rolled-Up Shirt Sleeves
Rolling up your sleeves can actually clean up your shirt and look pretty practical. The problem is when you roll your sleeves up so tight and high that the entire outfit looks like you’re trying too hard. Rolling your sleeves is fine, but don’t make it an event.
9. Shirts Left Excessively Unbuttoned
Leaving a button or two open is cute, but half unbuttoning your shirt is blatant attention-seeking. It’s especially apparent when you pair it with a necklace or perfectly groomed chest hair. You should be able to quickly decide what to wear before you decide how many buttons to leave open.
10. Excessively Distressed Jeans
As with faded jeans, ripping your jeans can look pretty cool when you don’t go overboard. Huge rips all over your pants ditch any style credibility your jeans may have left. Some girls may simply find torn-up jeans sloppy rather than stylish.
11. Tiny Shoulder Bags Worn for Fashion
Crossbody bags are great, especially when you’re using them to actually carry things. The problem is when you use a bag so small you can barely fit your wallet inside, just to look cool. Women aren’t bothered by the bag itself; it’s the ridiculously posh posture you strike while carrying it.
12. Oversized Watches
Big watches can be cool; they just need to be in proportion with your outfit. Having an accessory that dwarfs your wrist instantly shrinks the rest of your look. If someone notices your watch before they notice anything else you’re wearing, step away from the hyperlarge watches.
13. Matching Every Accessory
Matching your belt, shoes, watch strap, wallet, bracelet, and other accessories with absolute precision can sometimes make an outfit look overly planned. Coordination is useful, but perfect matching isn't necessary for everything you own to work together. A little variation can make the overall look feel more relaxed.
14. Shirts With Overly Inspirational Quotes
Funny shirts can be really cool, but some shirts seem like you’re recruiting everyone to listen to you speak. It’s not the words on the shirt we have a problem with; it’s when you look severely pretentious. If you’re sermonizing before you’ve said hello, perhaps that shirt isn’t for you.
15. Extremely Long Shorts
Speaking of shorts, long shorts can be pretty cool too. When your shorts push well past your knees, it throws off your whole outfit. A length that allows comfortable movement without overwhelming the rest of the outfit generally creates a cleaner appearance.
16. Excessively Pointy Dress Shoes
Pointy dress shoes are great when they aren’t looking like they belong on the Tennis Channel. When your shoes are so pointy, they draw more attention than your outfit, maybe they’re too pointy. If your shoes have toes that resemble elephant tusks, they’re too pointy.
17. Wearing Sports Jerseys Everywhere
People love team jerseys, but wearing your team jersey to every event will get boring. Wear your jersey to the game, happy hour, and maybe brunch, but mix it up sometimes. You don’t have to abandon your favorite team, but maybe take the jersey to lunch every now and then.
18. Too Many Bracelets
One bracelet is cool, two might be pushing it. Once your bracelets start making more noise than your keys, you’ve gone too far. Maybe remove a few.
19. Extremely Formal Clothes at Casual Events
Looking sharp isn't the same thing as being dramatically overdressed. If you’re the only person at the club rocking a tux, you’re too fancy. Wear what you want, just make sure you’re appropriate for the situation.
20. The Outfit He Clearly Chose to Impress Everyone
The biggest problem isn't necessarily one particular piece of clothing; it's wearing something purely because you believe women are supposed to find it attractive. People generally respond better when someone's style reflects genuine personality. Wear things you actually like, make sure they fit reasonably well, and remember that confidence usually works better when it doesn't require an audience to validate it.
