20 Style Choices That Get Attention but Not Always the Kind You Want

20 Style Choices That Get Attention but Not Always the Kind You Want

When Your Outfit Makes the Wrong Impression

Fashion is all about expressing your personality, experimenting with different looks, and wearing what makes you feel confident. However, some style choices can attract attention for reasons you might not have intended, especially when certain trends, combinations, or accessories don't quite work together. While nobody needs to follow every fashion rule, a little awareness of how your outfit comes across can help you avoid some surprisingly common style mistakes.

1. Wearing Clothes That Are Too Tight

There is such a thing as dressing too tight. Sure, some tight clothes are attractive on women and guys if they're fitted to their bodies. If you are squeezing yourself into clothes that are 3–4 sizes too small, you will not look your best. You may pull on your clothes, and they may expose certain parts of your body that you don't want exposed.

2. Overdoing Designer Logos

Designer clothing can be a great investment, but covering yourself in oversized brand logos doesn't necessarily communicate sophistication. If you have every designer brand visible on your body, you may look like you're trying too hard. Find that nice designer accessory that can show some class in your outfit.

3. Wearing Too Much Fake Tan

Fake tanning is great for looking tan on those days when we wish we could go to the beach. Just do not apply too much fake tan! It's obvious when someone is too many shades darker than their skin color. Fake tan tends to get on your hands and feet as well, and it shows when you're too dark.

4. Choosing Extremely High Heels You Can't Walk In

If you cannot walk in your heels, then maybe try finding a slightly lower pair. Constantly wobbling, holding onto furniture, or taking tiny steps can make an otherwise beautiful outfit look uncomfortable. There's nothing wrong with choosing a lower heel if it means you can actually enjoy your evening.

5. Wearing Sunglasses Indoors

Sunglasses are nice when worn outside or if they go with your outfit. There is no reason to have them on inside unless you have some sort of problem with light. They may seem cute to some, but it's odd to see someone wearing sunglasses indoors while talking to you.

6. Wearing Clothes With Visible Wrinkles

If you have wrinkled clothes on, no matter how nice they are, they will look bad on you. Most dress shirts, pants, and skirts tend to wrinkle easily. Be sure to iron your clothes before you leave.

7. Overloading on Accessories

Just like with designer brands, wearing too many accessories can cause you to overdo it. Big earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, etc., can distract people from the rest of your outfit. Remove a few that you think are not necessary.

8. Wearing Visible Undergarments

Some outfits are designed to incorporate visible lingerie, but accidental bra straps, exposed underwear, and noticeable panty lines can distract from an otherwise attractive look. Poorly fitting undergarments can also affect how clothing sits on your body, making even expensive pieces appear less polished. Checking your outfit under different lighting before leaving home can help prevent any unwanted surprises.

9. Choosing Shoes That Are Clearly Worn Out

Have nice clothes on, but your shoes look old? This can take away from your outfit. You do not have to wear the latest sneakers, but just be sure your shoes are not falling apart. Keeping your shoes clean and maintaining them regularly can help your overall appearance feel more considered.

10. Wearing Too Much Animal Print

If you are trying to look cute and dress up, you do not want to wear too many animal prints. If you feel you have to wear these types of outfits, maybe try just one. If you're trying to be flashy with leopard, zebra, or snakeskin prints, one piece will suffice.

11. Ignoring the Dress Code

Don't overdo the dress code. If it's stated that you should dress casually, you don't want to show up in your dress from prom. The same goes if it calls for formal wear; you don't want to show up in sneakers and your day-to-day clothes.

12. Wearing Too Much Perfume

Everyone likes to smell nice. But spraying yourself with too much perfume or cologne can give people around you headaches. Spray on a little, and you should be fine. A couple of well-placed sprays are generally enough to leave a pleasant impression without announcing your arrival from across the room.

13. Choosing Clothes That Don't Suit the Occasion

Like with the dress code, some outfits will look great on you, but others won't. Show up to lunch wearing what you would normally wear to go to a nightclub, or wear a fancy dress if you're going out during the day. Everyone will notice, but not in a good way.

14. Wearing Extremely Long Acrylic Nails

Everyone loves to have long nails. But don't take it too far. Having your nails extend way past your fingers with bright colors will catch everyone's eye. If you're trying to rock your fake nails, make sure they look nice.

15. Following Every Fashion Trend at Once

Following all the newest trends will not always benefit your wardrobe. There will be times when they just don't go together. Find the trends that you like and wear them. It's usually more effective to choose trends that genuinely suit your preferences instead of buying something simply because it's popular online.

16. Wearing Clothes With Obvious Pilling

Nobody likes to see pills on clothes, especially if it's a newer article of clothing. If you find pills on your clothes, try to comb them off or use an electric shaver to take them out. Using a fabric shaver or sweater comb can help restore the appearance of your favorite pieces without requiring you to replace them.

17. Choosing the Wrong Foundation Shade

Having the wrong shade of foundation can make it look like you did not do your makeup correctly. When you leave the house, try to see how your foundation looks outside in the sun. You may not see it in your mirror, but others can.

18. Wearing Sunglasses That Don't Suit Your Face

Statement sunglasses can completely change the look of an outfit, but not every oversized frame or trendy shape works for everyone. Frames that overwhelm your facial features or sit awkwardly on your nose can become distracting rather than flattering. Experimenting with different shapes and sizes is worthwhile because the right pair should complement your features while still reflecting your personality.

19. Wearing Clothing With Excessive Cutouts

It's always nice to see cutout clothing on girls and guys. Just make sure you can actually move and sit down in your clothing. Some of these outfits will look great on camera, but you will not feel comfortable all the time.

20. Neglecting Basic Grooming

Even the most fashionable wardrobe can't always compensate for neglected grooming habits. Unkempt hair, chipped nail polish, dirty fingernails, and visibly worn clothing can distract from an otherwise carefully chosen outfit. You don't need an elaborate beauty routine or expensive products to look presentable, but paying attention to a few basic details can make a noticeable difference.
