A Little Effort Goes A Long Way
A man doesn’t need a closet full of Italian loafers, vintage Levi’s, or shirts that look like they came from a Soho boutique to make a good impression. Most women notice simpler things first: whether his clothes are clean, whether they fit the setting, and whether he seems like he checked himself in the mirror before leaving. The red flags usually show up in the small details, like socks with holes, a misshapen collar, or unkempt facial hair. Some of these choices are harmless on their own, of course, and nobody’s perfect. For a date, dinner, party, or first meeting, though, these are the things men wear that can make any woman pause.
1. Yellowed Undershirts Worn As Shirts
A plain white undershirt can look clean and easy when it’s fresh, fitted, and thick enough to wear alone. Once it’s yellow around the collar or stretched out through the neckline, it shouldn’t be allowed out of the house. Congratulations, all the women in your life now think you’re wearing bed shirts out in public.
2. Pajama Pants In Public
Pajama pants are perfect for a Sunday morning. Worn to brunch, Target, or a casual date, it just comes across as tacky. Real pants don’t need to be fancy, but they do suggest he made a small effort.

3. Flip-Flops Away From The Beach
Flip-flops make sense at a hotel pool, a campground shower, or the boardwalk in July. At dinner, the movies, or a bar with actual glassware, they feel much too underdressed.
4. Dragging Pants
Pants that drag under the heel get dirty fast, and the frayed fabric is hard to miss. Even a decent pair of trousers looks trashy when the hem is shredded and stained.
5. Ripped Jeans
Not every pair of ripped jeans screams red flag. If they’re done well, they can add a very interesting visual texture to your outfit. The problem is when the rips creep toward the seat, crotch, or upper thigh area. Nobody wants to know what patterned briefs you’re wearing, so the jeans need to go.
6. A Giant Novelty Belt Buckle
A big belt buckle can work at a rodeo, a country concert, or a themed night out. In a regular restaurant or at a friend’s birthday dinner, a huge skull, beer logo, or joke buckle tends to take over the outfit. Unless you’re trying to make your buckle your “thing,” it just looks corny.
7. A Bulky Wallet
A stuffed back-pocket wallet might seem like a tiny detail, but it changes the shape of your pants. Old receipts, expired gift cards, and a stack of loyalty cards from places you haven’t visited since 2016 don’t need to come with you everywhere. A slimmer wallet looks cleaner and feels a little more grown-up.
8. Socks With Holes
Socks with holes stay hidden until they suddenly don’t. The moment shoes come off at someone’s apartment, a hole at the toe or heel becomes painfully noticeable. It’s a cheap fix, which is why ignoring it can seem careless.
9. Cracked Dress Shoes
Dress shoes don’t need to be expensive to look good. When the leather is cracked, peeling, or gray with old dust, it makes anyone look less put together. A quick clean, a little conditioner, or a replacement pair can make a bigger difference than most men expect.
10. Collars That Curl Up
A curled polo collar or floppy button-down collar can make an outfit look rumpled, even when the shirt is clean. This often happens after too many washes, too much heat, or years of being shoved into a drawer. If the collar won’t behave anymore, the shirt has probably done its time.
11. Sleeveless Shirts In The Wrong Setting
Tank tops and sleeveless shirts are fine at the gym, the beach, or a backyard barbecue in August. At dinner, a house party, or a first date, they can feel too bare for the room. Women don’t care if you’re jacked or not; they just want you to consider the environment you’re in.
12. Peeling Faux Leather Jackets
A leather-style jacket can look great when it’s in good shape. Once the sleeves, shoulders, or collar start peeling, it’s time to get rid of it. Women may notice that kind of wear because it sits right near the face, where small details tend to stand out.
13. Shirts With Stretched-Out Cuffs
A sweatshirt or long-sleeve tee with stretched cuffs has a very specific look: comfortable, well-loved, and probably ready to stay at home. When the fabric hangs loose around the wrists, it makes you look unkempt. It’s fine for the couch, but less great for drinks at 8 p.m.
14. Board Shorts As Everyday Shorts
Board shorts belong near water, and pretty much only near water. Worn as everyday shorts with a polo or button-down, it makes you look confused and unstylish. The shiny fabric and longer cut usually look out of place once swimming isn’t involved.
15. A Frayed, Cracked Belt
A belt sits right at the center of an outfit, so wear shows quickly. Cracked leather, peeling edges, and a warped buckle can make even clean jeans look older than they are. Since belts last for years when they’re decent, a rough one can make women wonder why you haven’t replaced it.
16. Shoes With Crushed Heel Backs
Some men slide into sneakers without untying them, crushing the backs until the shoes lose their shape. It looks messy, especially when the heel folds down and stays that way. We understand not wanting to tie your laces all the time, but it just makes your shoes look worn out.
17. Overdone Hair Gel
Hair products can help with shape and control, especially for short cuts. Too much gel, though, can leave hair stiff, shiny, or crunchy-looking, like you’re copying a look from the early 2000s. A softer finish usually looks more relaxed and touchable.
18. Patchy Self-Tanner Or Bronzer
There’s nothing wrong with using grooming products to look a little more refreshed. The problem starts when self-tanner turns orange around the knuckles, streaks at the neck, or collects near the hairline. If the face, hands, and neck don’t match, it just looks a little silly.
19. Backpack Straps Over A Nice Jacket
A backpack is practical for commuting, school, and long days running around the city. Heavy straps over a blazer, wool coat, or tailored jacket can crush the shoulders and make the outfit look less sharp. For dinner or a more formal setting, don’t reach for the backpack.
20. Shoes That Squeak, Flop, Or Slap The Floor
Noisy shoes make every entrance more noticeable than it needs to be. Flip-flops slapping tile, old sneakers squeaking across a restaurant floor, or loose soles flopping with every step can get distracting fast. Even if they still look to be in good shape, it doesn’t mean they are in good shape.
