Some Costumes Are Better Left on the Rack
Halloween is the perfect excuse to have fun with your wardrobe, regardless of your age! While there’s nothing wrong with gravitating towards something a little riskier, not every costume deserves a place on the pedestal. Once you've passed 50, you've ideally developed a better understanding of what makes you look and feel your best, and there's no reason to abandon that just because the pumpkins are out. Before you start planning your outfit, here are 20 costumes you might want to reconsider.
1. The Flirty Schoolgirl
It’s an all-too familiar combo: a tiny plaid skirt, knee-high socks, and a cropped white blouse. The ensemble has been a Halloween staple for decades, but dressing as a schoolgirl with deliberately provocative details can feel awkward when you’re nearing your golden years. There are plenty of playful ideas that don't involve pretending you're still in high school.
2. The Naughty Nurse
Speaking of classic Halloween getups, you probably remember when every costume place sold some version of the naughty nurse. However, with its miniature dress and impractical heels, this particular outfit hasn't aged well. Besides, actual nurses deserve a little more credit than being reduced to a revealing uniform and a plastic stethoscope.
3. The Adult Baby
Oversized diapers? Giant pacifiers and baby bonnets? Those occasionally appear at adult parties, but it's tough to know why. Okay, sure, the costume might earn a few laughs initially, but spending an entire evening pretending to be an infant gets old quickly. It’s even more cringe-worthy when someone overly commits to the bit!
4. The Skimpy Police Officer
A revealing police costume is usually nothing more than tiny shorts, a low-cut shirt, and a pair of plastic handcuffs. We get the appeal, but at the end of the day, all those little accessories just make the ‘fit feel rather uninspired. If you’re looking for something commanding, you could do much better than another store uniform designed to show skin.
5. The Granny
We know that it might seem funny to dress as an exaggerated grandma, but the joke gets a little less clever when you're already old enough to appreciate all those stereotypical things! If you already rock reading glasses and knitting needles, showing up with them isn’t really a costume anymore.
6. The Playboy Bunny
Between the strapless bodysuit and towering heels, this traditional costume needs…a lot of commitment. We won’t lie, the original uniform has an interesting history, but cheaply-made Halloween versions often look more tacky than glamorous. Unless you're genuinely enthusiastic about recreating the look, you’ll only wish you'd chosen something more comfortable.

7. The Toilet
Believe it or not, inflatable toilet costumes are readily available for adults who want to leave an impression. Unfortunately, navigating a crowded party in a giant costume isn't fun for anyone. You might get a few laughs, but the novelty won't last long enough to justify the inconvenience.
8. The Barely-There Cat
Cat costumes can be adorable, and their versatility has made them a hot-ticket item for just about any age group. But we’re not talking about the cute ones—we’re talking about the microscopic bodysuit, fishnets, and furry ears. Not only are they inappropriate after a certain age, but they’re also pretty overdone.
9. The Inflatable Dinosaur
Oh, you thought pretending to be a toilet was cumbersome? Introduce yourself to the inflatable dinosaur next! Their bulky bodies make every part of the evening difficult, and the limited visibility only makes things worse at a busy gathering. Forget all about dancing, eating, or sitting comfortably in this thing.
10. The Sultry Devil
A tiny dress and a plastic pitchfork have become such familiar accessories that they barely qualify as creative anymore. That’s reason alone to abandon the idea! The problem isn't wearing something daring, but choosing a costume that's been repeated so often it no longer makes much of an impression.
11. The Bride-to-Be
Wearing your wedding dress to a party? Adorable. Wearing a white mini dress, cheap veil, and novelty sash? That doesn’t always translate well. If you're interested in bridal costumes, don’t forget that this is Halloween—a dramatic ghost bride would at least offer something properly spooky.
12. The Flirty Flight Attendant
Remember those costumes with tiny skirts and miniature hats pretending to be airline uniforms? Well, the reality is that most look closer to outdated fantasies than the clothing worn by today's flight attendants. There's nothing really clever about an outfit that relies entirely on making an everyday occupation provocative.
13. The Giant Banana
Few costumes are as recognizable as the enormous yellow banana. Unfortunately, it suffers from the same fate as its inflatable brethren: an unusual shape that makes sitting down, climbing stairs, or getting into a car surprisingly awkward. Unless you're dead set on fruit-themed humor, there's a more enjoyable way to spend your evening.
14. The Revealing Maid
The black-and-white French maid costume has been around for so long that it's practically impossible to make it feel fresh. Between the tiny apron, feather duster, and revealing dress, most versions rely on the same tired details—especially if you go to an everyday costume shop. A woman with a well-developed style doesn't need to settle for another predictable costume.

15. The Risqué Little Red Riding Hood
Little Red Riding Hood might be a beloved fairy-tale character, but some costumes take liberties with her original appearance. It’s not about a child bamboozled by a wolf anymore—it’s about short red capes, revealing corsets, and impossibly high boots. If you're interested in a literary character, there are far more imaginative interpretations worth your time.
16. The Human Traffic Cone
Bright orange cones certainly make you visible, but that's about the extent of their appeal. Walking around inside a stiff structure can become uncomfortable, particularly when you're trying to mingle. You deserve an outfit that offers something more entertaining than turning you into roadside equipment.
17. The Skimpy Pirate
Pirate costumes can be wonderfully theatrical, especially when you put a little time into the costume! Think of all the possibilities. You have elaborate coats, feathered hats, and dramatic accessories to choose from, all of which help to make it your own. Unfortunately, the mass-produced women's versions often replace those interesting details with tiny skirts and uncomfortable corsets.
18. The Giant Whoopee Cushion
Some costumes are (pun intended) literally designed to be the butt of the joke. The enormous whoopee cushion is a perfect example. Wearing a bright pink inflatable cushion with an obvious message across the front might amuse a few guests, but it isn't a flattering fashion statement. Surely you can find something that showcases your personality without relying on bathroom humor!

19. The Inappropriate Girl Scout
Believe it or not, adult Halloween stores occasionally sell provocative interpretations of Girl Scout uniforms, complete with short skirts and revealing tops. Call us crazy, but the whole thing just seems creepy. You're better off choosing a character whose appearance doesn't depend on ruining a childhood institution.

20. The Provocative Grandma
We already touched on the everyday grandma, but the sultry one is another variation to avoid! Think gray wigs, oversized glasses, floral robes, and lingerie, all presented as a supposedly hilarious interpretation of older women. At 50 or beyond, it’s not only a weird choice, but there’s also no reason to participate in a joke that suggests mature women are inherently ridiculous for expressing themselves.
