Your Closet Has Seen Better Days
A good closet cleanout is like taking a breath of fresh air. You finally have some shelf space, and you’ll officially clear all the nonsense from the racks. So, why do we dread it so much? Ah, right…because cleanouts have a way of revealing just how sentimental we are about clothes! There's nothing wrong with keeping a few meaningful pieces, but some mostly just eat up precious real estate. With that, let’s dive into the 20 things women ought to get rid of already.

1. Jeans That Haven't Fit In Years
Most of us have encountered that one pair of jeans we keep around as some kind of target outfit. The thing is, if they've survived several cleanouts without making it into your weekly roster, they're creating more guilt than outfit options.

2. Bras With Stretched-Out Bands
We all know how precious an old, comfortable bra is, but at some point, you need to let the old girl rest. Bands eventually stretch, straps lose elasticity, and molded cups can even get misshapen after years of wear-and-tear. You shouldn’t tighten everything to the smallest setting just to keep it in place.
3. Painful Heels
Those gorgeous four-inch stilettos sure seemed worth the suffering when you bought them in 2017. Now, though? You can't make it through dinner without wanting to take them off. Shoes shouldn't mean holding back tears every time you wear them.
4. White T-Shirts That Aren't White Anymore
It’s always a little embarrassing when the pits of our favorite white tee go yellow, but that’s also a good sign to get rid of it. Because the change happens gradually, it's easy to keep reaching for it long after it’s gone to pasture, so hold it beside a new white shirt sometime; the difference may settle things immediately.
5. Peeling Handbags
Faux-leather bags don't always age gracefully, especially around handles and corners. Once the coating flakes onto your clothes or exposes the fabric underneath, no amount of careful positioning disguises it. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to new hardware.
6. Dresses You're Saving For an Imaginary Occasion
There's sometimes a very specific fantasy attached to unworn clothing. The sequined cocktail dress waits anxiously for an elegant party. Those heels are more than ready for a friend’s wedding. Meanwhile, five years pass, and the tags remain firmly attached. Unless an actual event is on your calendar, it might be time to say goodbye.
7. See-Through Leggings
Leggings announce their decline from behind, which unfortunately means you might be the last to notice. Repeated stretching and washing can also thin the fabric until underwear pokes through. A quick mirror check can prevent an accidental public reveal—and also tell you whether you need a replacement.
8. Sweaters Covered in Pilling
A fabric shaver can rescue plenty of knitwear, so a little pilling isn't always a reason to toss a sweater. Eventually, though, some knits become so fuzzy that removing the pills barely improves them. If your once-polished cardigan still looks tired after some TLC, you've probably gotten your money's worth.
9. Shoes With Completely Worn-Down Soles
People become remarkably loyal to comfortable shoes, even after they develop surprise holes. However, sneakers with bald soles and boots with badly worn heels don’t do your feet any favors. Repair quality footwear when it's worthwhile, but don't keep limping along.
10. Formal Dresses
Bridesmaid dresses take up closet space years after their final photoshoot, and it’s time to end the madness! Worse still, the same goes for old prom gowns, college formal dresses, and cocktail styles you haven't worn since your twenties. Sentimental value is one thing, but you don't need six feet of space for memories.

11. Underwear With Failing Elastic
Nobody else has to see your underwear for it to have standards. Waistbands that sag, stretched leg openings, frayed fabric, and pairs you constantly adjust aren't doing their job anymore. Replacing them may not be the most exciting, but you'll appreciate the difference.
12. Costume Jewelry
There’s nothing wrong with affordable jewelry…until its plating starts rubbing away. Accessories that leave green marks rarely regain their original appeal, so if you skip a piece whenever you're going through a jewelry box, there's little reason to keep it.
13. Jackets With Broken Zippers
It's really easy to spend three winters insisting you'll repair the same broken zipper, but during that time, your poor coat hangs unused. Safety pins or pure optimism aren’t cutting it anymore—either take it to a tailor or accept that the repair isn't happening.
14. Stretched-Out Swimsuits
Chlorine, sunscreen, salt water, heat, and repeated washing can be brutal on swimwear. A swimsuit that's sagging at the backside or suddenly requires constant adjusting has also lost the elasticity that once made it fit properly. Don't wait until you're climbing out of a pool to discover just how loose it is.
15. Trendy Pieces You Never Liked
Sometimes we buy stuff because trends decided everyone needed something. We’ve all fallen victim to it, so no judgment here! But once the trend passes, there's no reason to keep pretending the purchase was a good one.
16. Pajamas That Are Falling Apart
The only item people are more loyal to than shoes is PJs. It doesn’t matter if a soft T-shirt has holes or stretched seams. Who cares if those pants have mystery stains? Well, you should! Your favorite pajamas don't have to look glamorous, but intact fabric is a must.
17. Cracking Belts
Leather and faux leather often reveal their age around the holes, so keep an eye out. Cracks, peeling edges, warped shapes, and worn hardware can make an otherwise polished outfit look pretty neglected, too. Not to mention, since belts are easy to overlook, damaged ones usually stick around a lot longer than they should.
18. Clothes You Constantly Adjust
Some items technically fit but still make you miserable every time you wear them. A wrap top that keeps opening or a skirt that rotates around your waist can turn an ordinary day into hours of fidgeting. If you're always monitoring the clothing, it hasn't earned permanent closet status.
19. Cheap Sunglasses
As cute as knock-offs can be, those lenses eventually become so scratched that looking through them is noticeably cloudy. And yet, we keep them around because they're still technically wearable. Here’s the thing: once damage interferes with your vision, that $15 pair has done its job.

20. Expensive Clothes
Don’t hang onto something you hate just because it’s expensive! A designer blouse that pinches or an expensive skirt you've only worn once isn't suddenly useful. We know that donating it feels painful, but you can also sell, consign, or pass the item along to at least give it a chance at life.
