10 Things You Should Never Wear To The Beach & 10 You Should

A Quick Word Before You Hit the Beach

That beautiful beach life aesthetic fools you. Few things will ruin your time faster than improper beach attire. From water absorption to ruined sun clothes, sand, heat and salt water mix destroy certain wardrobe choices. However, some things make your life there easier without you even realizing it. Before you start packing, take a look at our helpful (and totally useless!) list of things you should (and shouldn’t) wear to the beach.

1. Heavy Denim Jeans

Jeans absorb water and take forever to dry. Walking around the beach in wet jeans is heavy and uncomfortable. You’ll feel restricted instead of relaxed by the time you leave.

2. Leather Sandals

Leather sandals might be cute at first, but salt water and sand are not kind to them. Leather can become stiff and brittle, sometimes even smelling funky afterward. You’ll probably regret choosing style over comfort once you walk too far.

3. Tight, Non-Stretch Clothing

Non-stretch materials become even more restrictive when it’s hot and humid out. Sitting down on your towel or standing up repeatedly can become bothersome. You’ll be too busy pulling yourself down that you won’t enjoy relaxing.

4. Dark Colors in Peak Sun

Dark colors like black soak up heat quickly and retain it. If you spend time in direct sunlight wearing dark colors, you’ll feel hot. Trust us, you don’t want to feel like you’re melting on the beach.

5. Expensive Jewelry

Quick disclaimer, we know some loves rocks wear jewelry at the beach all the time. Sand and salt water will, however, swallow your rings, necklace, and earrings with no warning. Salt water may also fade jewelry finishes or damage fragile jewelry. Nobody wants to lose that expensive or sentimental piece.

6. Full Makeup

Sun and humidity are makeup’s enemies. Sweating and splashing will turn that full-face glossy look into a drip within minutes. You’ll be glad you wore minimal (or no) makeup.

7. Closed-Toe Fabric Shoes

Canvas shoes and sneakers trap sand in them like it’s their job. After the sand gets in there, it’ll irritate your feet with every step you take. Trust us, you’ll want shoes that you can easily shake the sand out of.

8. Long, Flowing Pants

Flowy pants may be cute and all, but they tend to hold a lot of sand at the bottom. The material can also drag along wet from sitting in the water. Trust us when we say that swag will fade pretty quick.

9. Strapless Tops Without Support

If you’re wearing a strapless crop top, you better be ready for some extra activity. The ocean breeze and unexpected movements will expose you more than you might like. No one wants to be tugging at their shirt all day long.

10. Anything You’d Be Upset to Ruin

Salt water stains, sunscreen stains, sand, and sweat can ruin your favorite shirt in a matter of minutes. If you’re super attached to the shirt you’re about to wear, maybe leave it at home. You don’t want to get into a situation where you are wearing your favorite shirt a week from now and still finding sand in it!

Now that we’ve covered what you shouldn’t wear, let’s talk about what you absolutely should bring with you to up your beach vibe.
